English Language Programs

The following programs are open to English learners at UVA and in the local Charlottesville community.

Free Virtual Group

The International Center administers a book group and an English conversation group during the fall and spring semester and an English conversation group during the summer when the University is under normal operations.

For spring 2021, we are modifying the Book Discussion Group and combining it with the Conversation Group as Reading Discussion sessions, more details below. The group will meet on Zoom. No fee is required. UVA students and scholars who are outside the U.S. are welcome to participate. Participants must complete a short Zoom registration form in order to get the Zoom meeting link. For questions about the groups, please email

Conversation & Reading Discussion Group

Spring 2021: WEDNESDAYS, 9:30-10:30 AM Eastern Time | February 3 - May 5 (not meeting on February 17)

Reading Discussion sessions on March 3 and 31 and April 28

Participants gather informally for conversation. The group leaders create discussion topics and activities to help participants practice speaking English. During the Reading Discussion sessions on the dates listed above, the group will read short stories aloud together and discuss them afterwards. The reading session is an opportunity to improve English reading skills and your understanding of the English language. The group, overall, is also an opportunity to make friends and learn about U.S. culture and exchange information with others about your own culture.
