English Language Programs

ESL Group and Class

The following programs are held at the Lorna Sundberg International Center, 21 University Circle, and open to English learners at UVA and in the local Charlottesville community.

English Conversation Group
Tuesdays, 5:30-6:30pm, check link for schedule
Participants gather weekly for informal conversation at the International Center. The group leader(s) create discussion topics and activities to help participants practice speaking English. This is an opportunity to make friends, improve English skills, and share cultures.  Led by volunteers, no fee is required.

English Book Group
CURRENTLY INACTIVE - to show interest in attending or leading, email us at [email protected] 
The group meets weekly at the International Center and participants are welcome to join in as their schedule allows. Participants read works by U.S. authors that provide an opportunity to learn about and discuss U.S. culture and society. This is an informal opportunity to improve English reading skills and your understanding of the English language. Led by volunteers, no fee is required.

 
Spring 2024: February 1 - April 11 (not meeting March 7)
Thursdays, 9 – 11am 
Application and fee are required.  This 10-week class is designed to help students speak fluently and accurately.  Students will work on improving pronunciation, learn idioms, review parts of speech, and give oral presentations.  There is weekly written homework. Non-credit course fee for 20 hours of instruction is $281.
 
Fall 2024: September 19 - November 21
Thursdays, 9 – 11am
