English Language Programs

The following programs are held at the International Center and are open to English learners at UVA and in the local community.

Free Groups

No fee or registration required for the following groups.

Book Discussion Group | Tuesdays, 10:30am – 12pm
Spring 2018: February 6 – May 1 (not meeting on March 6)
Participants read and discuss The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls in spring 2018. This is an informal opportunity to improve English reading skills and your understanding of the English language.
English Conversation Group | Tuesdays, 12:30 – 2pm 
Spring 2018: February 6 – May 1 (not meeting on March 6) 
Participants gather informally for conversation. The group leader(s) creates discussion topics and activities to help participants practice speaking English. This is an opportunity to make friends, improve English skills, and share cultures. 

Classes for a Fee

We are accepting students for the Multiskills English class on a rolling basis at this time. The Advanced Oral Communication class is full but students can complete the interest form to join the waiting list.
Multiskills English Class | Mondays and Wednesdays, 9 – 11am or 11:30am – 1:30pm*
Spring 2018: February 6  April 18 (not meeting on March 5 & 7)

Application and fee are required. This class focuses on the areas of vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation to reinforce listening, speaking, and reading for the intermediate to advanced student. Non-credit course fee for 40 hours of instruction is $283.

(FULL) Advanced Oral Communication Class | Thursdays, 9 – 11am 
Spring 2018: February 8  April 19 (not meeting on March 8)

Application and fee are required. This class is designed to help students speak fluently and accurately. Students will learn idioms and review parts of speech through interactive tasks such as role-play, debate, and discussion. There is weekly written homework. Non-credit course fee for 20 hours of instruction is $236.

The University reserves the right to make changes to future course fees.

*The sections may be combined if there is low enrollment.

Application Instructions 

New students must follow the application steps below in order. Former students, please email our office for application details.

Step 1: Complete the online interest form.

Step 2: Attend a mandatory screening meeting with the instructor, Claudine O’Brien. The instructor will determine if your English level is appropriate for one or both classes. If your level is too low or too high, you will not be able to take the class.

Step 3: If accepted, our office will email you the online class application form to complete by January 26, 2018. Once we receive your application, you will be billed by UVA.

Step 4: Pay for the class online or at the UVA Cashier’s Office. You will receive an email with detailed instructions on how to pay.

After the application deadline, we will start admitting students from the waiting list if there is room.
